Guru, Shrimathi Sivanuja Balaji, a revered artist and educator who has dedicated over 30 years to mastering and teaching the classical art of Bharatanatyam. Her training was guided by the legendary Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman and Shrimathi Krishnaveni Lakshman, and her expertise in Karanas was enriched under the mentorship of Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Padma Subramaniam. Additionally, she honed her skills in Carnatic music under Vairamangalam Shri Lakshmi Narayanan.
Guru Sivanuja Balaji is recognized internationally for her contributions to the arts. She serves as the coordinator for Griffin College London in Minnesota, a guest artist at Ordway, and a valued member of the Cowles Center Program & Education Committee’s advisory panel. As an alumna of the prestigious Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts, she embodies a profound understanding of Bharatanatyam, preserving the essence of the Kalakshetra style while fostering its evolution to resonate in modern contexts.
Her visionary approach extends beyond the stage; she collaborated on the film REFUGE with renowned choreographer Jennifer Aravey and award-winning filmmaker Philip Harder. This project exemplifies her commitment to expanding Bharatanatyam’s reach, bridging classical traditions with contemporary media to create immersive cinematic experiences.
